Prior to delving into the costs and fees associated with attending detox, it is helpful to gain a broad understanding of the types of detox programs available.
There are different detox methods that offer varying levels of support. The cost of detox depends on several contributing factors, such as the detox format selected, type of addiction, treatment facility location, amenities offered, prior history of recovery attempts, and insurance coverage. In general, outpatient care is less expensive than inpatient care, but inpatient care might be more effective for some people. Every individual is different and will require different types of support when it comes to the detox process. There is no across-the-board, universal fee regarding the cost of detox.
Medically supervised detox, for example, usually takes place in a specific facility that is equipped to deal with various intense withdrawal symptoms. There are several types of substances, including many prescription medications (e.g., benzodiazepines, prescription opioid narcotics, etc.) that which individuals are highly encouraged to pursue medically supervised detox due to the severity of the withdrawal symptoms. In some cases, medically supervised detox will enable a person to safely wean him or herself from the abused substance. Depending on the drug abused, some individuals may need additional medications to help with his or her drug cravings and/ or withdrawal symptoms. With a medically supervised detox, an individual will have access to twenty-four-hour medical care, in addition to being closely monitored and supported throughout the entire process. Inpatient detox programs often come with a higher price tag as an individual assumes the fees associated with room and board.
An outpatient detox program or a non-medically supervised detox can take place in almost any location and does not require a participant to absorb the costs that come with residing in a detox facility. The overall fee does not include costs associated with travel to the program, nor does it include the cost of time off work, meals, or residence other than the individual’s existing home. The average person in outpatient detox stays for 6.5 days or about a week, which is the standard amount of time it takes for most people to get through the most intense withdrawal symptoms.
