Blue Cross Blue Shield, commonly known as BCBS, is one of the foremost health insurance providers in the country.

It has been in existence since 1929, and currently provides nationwide healthcare coverage to over 114.5 million members in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. More than 1.7 million doctors and hospitals contract with Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) companies, which is more than any other insurer. BCBS offers quality, affordable healthcare that is based on the personalized needs of the communities where their members live and work. BCBS also happens to be one of the most widely accepted insurance companies among drug rehab providers today.

Blue Cross Blue Shield is committed to providing excellent health benefits coverage for its plan members. They understand that addiction is a chronic disease that can be treated. As such, some coverage of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment is included in its group benefits packages. If deemed necessary, for example, most BCBS plans cover treatment for medical detox. However, akin to other medical insurance companies, BCBS offers its own set of tiered medical coverage plans that consist of different in and out-of-network benefits, deductibles, monthly premiums, and related coverage. The benefits and coverage will vary from one policy to another so that certain limits may apply. Typically, plans that require less expensive monthly premiums often provide less expansive coverage.

In general, Blue Cross Blue Shield plans do cover treatment for addiction, including detox, at least in part, but again, specifics are based on the individual policy you possess. Substance abuse detox programs can be quite costly. Additionally, there is a significant range regarding potential costs and fees related to each detox program. Some detox programs do work with insurance companies (e.g., BCBC) and will accept insurance as a form of payment (or partial payment, depending on your plan), while other detox programs may not accept any type of insurance. Hence, it is important to bear in mind that although there are a many detox programs available, not all health plans provide coverage for every facility and/ or program. Consult your policy or contact Blue Cross Blue Shield for details about Blue Cross Blue Shield detox coverage.
